Assistant Trip Captain, Joe Sarlo's, trip report:
During the first week of
February the Little Rock Ski Club ventured west for
their first trip of the year. The destination was Park
City, Utah, and our familiar haunts at the Peaks Hotel.
We were joined at
the Salt Lake City airport by our Chicago contingent of
the Little Rock Ski Club, Jill Hebert and Kevin
Montgomery. We had to school them in proper Southern
accents, and by the end of the week they were beginning
to catch on, "ya'll".
On Sunday the group
went to Deer Valley. While negotiating the first of
several particularly difficult black bump runs, Bob
Hamilton mentioned to me in private that he had promised
his wife he would avoid moguls while in Utah. It seems
he is recovering from recent hip surgery. I swore to
keep his secret, so if any of you see Marsha, don't
breathe a word.
Lynn Presher took
time off from skiing with the gang to take lessons, and
by the end of the week she claims she could now ski with
the "big boys", whomever they might be.
Jill, Kevin, David
Bentley, and myself used to think we were among the big
boys, but that was before skiing with Jill's friend
Grace. Grace is a Park City resident and ski
instructor. We all were repeatedly embarrassed by our
futile efforts to keep up with her as she sped down the
slopes.
During the week Gil
Caver decided to take a day off in order to join Judy
Sims at the spa. They got matching pedicures, which put
those of us with ordinary toes in the apre' ski hot tub
to shame.
Speaking of hot
tubs, Beth Kahn managed to make new friends there with a
group from the Maryland Ski Club. She joined them on
their day trip to her favorite ski area, Alta, and
reports having a wonderful time.
Unfortunately the
ongoing romantic saga of Patti Lucarz slowed during this
trip. That is to say that your reporter was unable to
dig up any dirt on her. But if anyone has some juicy
gossip, please let me know and I will include it in
future additions of this article.
During lunch one day, Mike Graves and
Carlyn Yancey happened to run into Stein Eriksen, the
1952 Olympic medalist from Norway. This 82 year old ski
legend is now Director of Skiing at Deer Valley. As
they collected his autograph, Mr. Eriksen asked Carlyn
if she were Norwegian, and told Mike that he had a
beautiful girlfriend. He then hugged Carlyn and gave
her a pat on the butt. Not bad for 82. If I patted
Carlyn on the butt, I'd get slugged.
On Friday Howard
Greene organized a group van to Alta. Thanks Howard!
Included in the packed van (which symbolized the
intimacy of the Little Rock Ski Club) were Howard,
Carlyn, Mike, Gil, Lynn, Beth, Bob and
Patti. Tommy Thomas decided to back out at the last
minute so that he could remain closer to the Peaks Hotel
with its hot tubs and comfortable beds. Tommy is a man
who thinks like me.
All in all, it seems
to have been another successful adventure for our ski
club, with everyone enjoying themselves.
Finally, though, I
would like to put an end to the vicious rumor that your
assistant trip leader, Joe Sarlo, pocketed the bus
driver's tip money which he collected from the group
both coming from and going to the airport. UNTRUE! I
would, however, like to thank everyone for buying me
dinner, twice.
