Assistant Trip Captain, Joe Sarlo's, trip report:
Little Rock Ski Club just returned from an exciting week
in Park City and a wonderful trip led by our favorite
trip leader, Mike Graves. With Carlyn Yancey’s
guidance, Mike did manage to keep us in line and on
schedule most of the time.
Travel both to and from Utah was an adventure secondary
to Delta Airlines having mechanical problems, but this
resulted in club members being able to spend lots of
quality time in the Cincinnati Airport. Just ask us,
and we can tell you where every eatery, restroom, and
water fountain is located; and just how fast a run it is
from the A concourse to the B concourse (and vice
versa), only to find out that another flight has been
delayed.
Once we got there, however, Park City was great! The
Peaks Hotel staff was gracious, and for most of the week
the weather was perfect. It snowed the day we arrived,
and then was sunny until Thursday when it started
snowing again. The snow stopped just in time for our
return flight to Little Rock (via another opportunity
for more bonding time in Cincinnati).
There were no major injuries, although Joe Sarlo did
pick up some strange Park City maladies that required
him to live in his bathroom for the last two days of the
trip. Fortunately for him, and the rest of the group,
the problem cleared up in time for the flight home.
Although David Bentley may deny that the reason for his
going to Utah was to shop for some new wives, the result
still was that he had no takers. He remains single and
had to settle for a Polygamy Porter tee shirt instead.
Our
group’s Miss Dual Personality, Lynn/Mildred Presher
(we’re still not sure which is her real first name),
brought her own personal ski coach, and she claimed by
the end of the week that she was now able to keep up
with the big boys on the slopes.
Shannon Rust made the mistake of using an “experts
only” chair to the mountaintop. Once she saw the car
size moguls at the start of the run, she pleaded with
the lift operator to let her ride back down again. He
must have relented, because she came home without any
broken bones.
Our
non skiers, Robbie and Bill Riley, said that they also
enjoyed the week; taking advantage of the locale to tour
Salt Lake City, the Mormon Tabernacle, and the 2002
Winter Olympics Park. Bill used the Church’s genealogy
resources to trace his family back several generations.
On
Thursday night most of the group went to Deer Valley for
an unusual treat, wild game stews and assorted goodies,
with each food and wine course served at various
fireplaces around the restaurant. David rather
irreverently called it the “stations of the stew”
place. He and the rest of the group, however, agreed
that the meal was unique and delicious.
Beth Kahn, Paul Cochran, and Sean Graves, along with
David and Joe (before his bathroom confinement) were
seen conquering all three nearby mountains, pausing only
briefly each day for lunch. Susan Belt, Pat Spivey,
and Keri Cataldo also claimed to have conquered the
mountains, but Pat admitted that it was mostly by way of
blue and green runs.
On
the bus ride from our hotel to the Salt Lake City
Airport, Victor Menefee stood for his traditional end of
trip speech. His pep talk urged each of us to bring at
least one new club member with us for the next trip.
His wife, Jo Light, listened intently and promised us
she would bring a new person next year.
All
in all, it seems that everyone had a wonderful time.
When Mike asked us if we wanted to come back to Park
City again, the answer was a unanimous YES!
